Chief Estimator

SUMMARY:

The Chief Estimator at National Electric Works oversees all aspects of the estimating department, including developing accurate and competitive bids for complex electrical projects, managing estimating processes, providing leadership, strategic guidance, and mentoring estimating staff. This position requires extensive experience in electrical estimating, expert knowledge of industry practices, and a proactive approach to business development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Estimating

  • Lead and oversee all estimating activities and staff, ensuring accuracy, quality, and efficiency.
  • Review and approve final bid packages, ensuring completeness and compliance with project specifications and requirements.
  • Establish estimating standards, procedures, and best practices for the department.
  • Conduct final reviews of complex cost estimates, quantity take-offs, and risk assessments.
  • Provide expert-level analysis of project scope, specifications, and contract documentation.
  • Oversee subcontractor and vendor negotiations to secure optimal terms and pricing.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and organized estimate folders.
  • Mentor and train senior estimators and estimating personnel, encouraging professional development and growth.
  • Represent the estimating department in client meetings, bid reviews, and project kickoffs.

Business Development

  • Build and sustain strategic relationships with key clients, vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Identify new opportunities, trends, and market conditions relevant to electrical estimating.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to refine estimating strategies based on competitive analysis and bid outcomes.
  • Regularly analyze department performance and implement improvements for bid effectiveness and competitiveness.

EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related discipline strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive estimating experience in electrical construction, with substantial leadership experience.
  • Proven track record of successfully estimating and securing large-scale, complex electrical projects.
  • Expert proficiency in estimating software (Accubid or equivalent).
  • Advanced skills in Bluebeam or similar PDF markup software.
  • Exceptional analytical, mathematical, leadership, and risk assessment abilities.
  • Strong ability to interpret complex blueprints, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Outstanding communication, organizational, and managerial skills.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary range: $150,000 - $190,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Standard office environment. The individual will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear. Occasionally may have to lift boxes containing project documents or materials, typically 20 pounds or less.
